Volunteer

Introduction

On 9-10 November 2019, I volunteered at the in Guangzhou. It was held by one of the most influential game media in China - . Many famous game companies participated in the show such as Xbox, Ubisoft, Tencent Games, NetEase Games. Many indie game developers also came to promote their new games. Moreover, the organizer invited American actor Roger Clark, who provided the voice and motion capture for Arthur Morgan in Red Dead Redemption 2, and Japanese game producer, the father of the Castlevania Koji Igarashi to give a talk.

My Job

I volunteered at Tencent A.C.E Program. This program aims to help small game studios and indie game developers to release their game on the mobile platform. I was responsible for promoting the mobile version of the Slay The Spire. My job was Introducing the game, facilitating smooth running of the game show and helping the players in need of assistance. Although volunteering was tiring, it was very meaningful. Not only did I make friends with other volunteers, but also I had a deeper connection with the game industry.

Notable Experience —— A Meaningful Talk With Mr. Ryan Clark

This experience provided me with a very good opportunity to get in contact with players, game companies, game media, and indie game developers. I was thrilled to speak face-to-face with founder and CEO of Brace Yourself Games Mr. Ryan Clark, designer of Crypt of the NecroDancer and Cadence of Hyrule, who was showcasing his new game Phantom Brigade. He gave me a lot of very useful suggestions for entering the games industry, emphasizing how games companies have very high standards nowadays in terms of skills and design, He also told me that the best way to learn is to keep making games and build experience on bigger projects, and when I asked him what the secret of his games was, he replied that, without question, it was the unique and interesting gameplay. This valuable conversation has benefited me a lot and made me reflect on what I still lack to accomplish my dream.
